Hotspot monitoring, fire investigation, and type and distribution of land assets in the KFCP area

Vast areas of tropical peatland have become degraded through land conversion, particularly that involving drainage from canal establishment and logging. This degradation often leads to fires resulting in harmful smoke and higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon, into the atmosphere. For REDD+ activities to be successful, a greater understanding is required regarding the volume and distribution of these fires, so that their annual GHG emissions can be recorded accurately. Furthermore, the causes of, motivations for and other details about the fires need to be further understood in order to facilitate better fire management.

Laporan ini disusun sebagai salah satu hasil kerjasama dengan Tim Khusus REDD+ UKP4 dan Tim REL Provinsi Kalimantan Tengah dalam rangka memenuhi persyaratan pelaporan sementara Kemitraan Pemerintah Indonesia dengan Pemerintah Norwegia terkait REDD+. Laporan ini menyajikan hasil analisis perhitungan sementara emisi historis GRK tahunan (2000-2009) akibat deforestasi hutan alam dan dekomposisi lahan gambut yang terdegradasi di Kalimantan Tengah (provinsi percontohan REDD+ pertama) dengan menggunakan pendekatan yang relatif mudah diaplikasikan di lapangan. Laporan disusun oleh tim INCAS di Badan Litbang Kehutanan, berdasarkan masukan dari para mitra program terutama Lembaga Penerbangan dan Antariksa Nasional (LAPAN) dan Direktorat Jenderal Planologi Kehutanan.

Kajian ini menyajikan hasil pendugaan yang komprehensif dari biomassa hutan alam di Kalimantan Tengah. Dugaan total biomassa hutan dalam kajian ini merepresentasikan tiga tipe hutan alam (hutan lahan kering, hutan rawa dan hutan bakau) pada kondisi primer dan sekunder. Berbagai sumber data inventarisasi hutan dan informasi dari hasil penelitian sebelumnya telah digunakan untuk pendugaan biomassa hutan ini. Kajian ini menggambarkan analisis yang lebih komprehensif dan lebih baik dalam penentuan faktor emisi hutan, yaitu dengan menggunakan plot inventarisasi hutan spesifik untuk Kalimantan Tengah dan menggunakan pedoman alometrik dalam pendugaan biomassa dan stok karbon hutan. Biomassa hutan di atas permukaan tanah juga memasukkan semua tingkat pertumbuhan pohon.

Trends in fruiting and flowering phenology with relation to abiotic variables in Bornean peat-swamp forest tree species suitable for restoration activities

In this report, we present the results of a six-year study of the fruiting phenology of Bornean peat-swamp forest trees at two sites: Sabangau and Tuanan. The objective of this report is “to determine the phenology of a broad range of tropical peat-swamp forest tree species found in Central Kalimantan”, in order to facilitate peat-swamp forest restoration activities in Indonesia.

Historical Land Cover Classification and Land Cover Change in the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) Site and the Kapuas District

The present report describes the historical land cover and land cover change assessment for the Kapuas District and the project area of the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. RSS - Remote Sensing Solutions GmbH conducted this multi-temporal land cover change assessment based on the evaluation of 29 Landsat satellite images for the years 1991, 1997, 2000, 2005 and 2009. The land cover/vegetation type maps were generated with a minimum mapping unit of 2 ha and provide information on forest status and forest disturbances. The applied classification legend is compatible to the FAO Land Cover Classification System (LCCS).

Tropical Peat Swamp Forest Silviculture in Central Kalimantan

The Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) undertook a program of silviculture research for reforestation trials in the KFCP site in Central Kalimantan province. Seedlings were cultivated from seeds or wildlings in local community nurseries and then transplanted and monitored in the field.

KFCP Hydrology and Peat Monitoring Methodology

This paper presents the methodology designed and implemented for the hydrology and peat soil   monitoring activities carried out in the Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP) area in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia as part of the partnerships MRV program. The monitoring system designed and implemented in KFCP is required for two different applications. The first is to collect a time series of high-quality environmental data that will assist in the quantification of carbon loss from the KFCP area. KFCP also supplements the ‘basic’ monitoring of hydrology and soils with specialist monitoring and analyses (e.g. of gas emissions, geochemical peat characteristics) as advised by the KFCP Peat and GHG Expert Group1. The second is designed to evaluate the impact of water levels and peat land subsidence rates from peatland rehabilitation interventions.

Kalimantan Forests and Climate Partnership (KFCP)merupakan salah satu program kerjasama antara Pemerintah Indonesia dan Australia di bidang perubahan iklim. Program KFCP ditujukan untuk mengujicoba cara pengurangan emisi Gas Rumah Kaca (GRK) dari deforestasi dan degradasi hutan (REDD+) di hutan rawa gambut di Kalimantan Tengah. Intervensi tersebut diantaranya melalui penutupan/ penabatan tatas (kanal kecil), reforestasi, pembuatan palisade, dan sebagainya. Selain itu, KFCP juga mengembangkan mata pencaharian alternatif bagi warga desa yang tinggal di area program KFCP.

This report outlines why monitoring teams were established in KFCP and are necessary for REDD+. It then describes the team-specific and shared lessons learned from the field of the three KFCP monitoring teams. Topics include: working within the village institutions, local community involvement, staff training, to methodological refinements, costs, efficiency, and data management. Each section describes the context to each topic, the challenges faced, and steps taken to overcome these challenges and minimise the likelihood of obstacles emerging, with discussion and recommendations provided. Where possible, variation across the study site is discussed and detailed examples are given in each section.
